my father had followed his girlfriend here, to scotland, in doing so, he had professed his undying love for her and, as if in an act of finality, had written to his legions across the sea, as he was a formal correspondent to the papers of home. he gave me a copy of his first book, one such that received praise from various women's periodicals at the time and the cover was decorated with the harlequin costume art that my sister and i had been so fond of. everything was coloured like must.

as if our families printed matter were the theme of my travels, i found a book of my own authorship, new and unused, passed to me one day. i know not from whom. on the cover, a dry desert was hidden by some deciduous trees. those few leaves beginning to fall were littering the oblong pool. a girl with long dark hair was kissing her lover against an auburn and aubergine sunset. it seemed i was looking down from above and the act of taking the photographs disappeared from the shelves of my memory so quickly, as did the book itself.
